We present two options: 1) for IT Admins to setup Group policies for all employees, and 2) for a user with Administrator permissions on an individual PC..
Note: We assume you are using Windows 11 Pro.
Instructions for IT Admins
Add group policies for managing Chrome Extension (if not already there)
We need to setup group policies for the chrome browser, in case the browser is not already being managed.
Follow these steps to setup group policies on your chrome browser-
- Go to Chrome Enterprise Download page and click on Download Chrome
Enterprise Browser Download for Windows & Mac - Chrome Enterprise - In the following popup, check the following settings and click on Accept and Download button
- Locate the GoogleChromeEnterpriseBundle64.zip file and extract it’s contents to a folder
-
(Optional) Install the chrome enterprise browser if not installed, go to GoogleChromeEnterpriseBundle64 > Installers > GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise.msi
-
Go to GoogleChromeEnterpriseBundle64 > Configuration > admx and copy google.admx and chrome.admx files to your policy definitions folder, eg- C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions
-
Check the which lang folder present in your PolicyDefinitions folder, eg en-US in this case
-
Now locate the same lang folder from your policy definitions in the GoogleChromeEnterpriseBundle64 you downloaded, eg. GoogleChromeEnterpriseBundle64 > Configuration > admx > en-US
-
Now go to GoogleChromeEnterpriseBundle64 > Configuration > admx > en-US and copy google.adml and chrome.adml to respective lang folder into C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\en-US (based on your lang folder)
-
Once this is done, you should open the Group Policy Editor on windows and should be able to Locate Administrative Templates > Google > Google Chrome > Extensions policies
Now the Chrome Group Policy Settings are correctly configured for the user
