How to configure Windows Group Policies for Microsoft Edge Browser Extension installation – Voicegain

Installing Voicegain’s Copilot requires setting up Microsoft Edge policy settings on Windows devices for the users at the domain level. We assume you are already running Windows 11 Pro/Business Editions.

Before starting, ensure you have received a Voicegain Configuration Sheet from your Voicegain account representative. This sheet contains all policy values and the extension download URL required during setup. If you have not received one, contact your representative before continuing.

Where do I start?

Check whether the Microsoft Edge Administrative Template is already installed on your domain controller or local machine:

Open Group Policy Editor — press Windows key + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
In the left-hand tree, expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates.
Look for a Microsoft Edge node in the list.

If the Microsoft Edge node is visible, skip Step 1 and proceed directly to Step 2. If it is not visible, start at Step 1 below.

Step 1 — Install the Microsoft Edge Administrative Template

If you already have the Edge Administrative Template installed, skip this step and go to Step 2.

Go to the Microsoft Edge Enterprise landing page.
Click the Policy Download link located below the Download button.
Download and extract the package to an accessible location.
Proceed to section 1.1 below to place the template files.

1.1 — Place the template files

Choose the method that matches your environment.

Method A — Active Directory (recommended for domain-managed devices)

On a domain controller or workstation with RSAT, navigate to the PolicyDefinitions folder. For older versions of Windows Server, you may need to create this folder — see How to create and manage the Central Store for Group Policy Administrative Templates for guidance.
Inside the extracted package, navigate to windows > admx.

Copy msedge.admx into the PolicyDefinitions folder.

Open the appropriate language folder inside admx (e.g. en-US for English).
Copy msedge.adml into the matching language subfolder inside PolicyDefinitions. Create the folder if it does not exist.

If your domain has multiple domain controllers, the files will replicate automatically at the next replication interval.
To verify, open Group Policy Management Editor and expand Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates. A Microsoft Edge node should now be visible.

Method B — Individual computer (use if Active Directory is not present)

Inside the extracted package, navigate to windows > admx.
Copy msedge.admx to your local Policy Definition folder.

Copy msedge.adml into the matching language subfolder.

To verify, press Windows key + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter. Expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates. A Microsoft Edge node should now be visible. If an error occurs on launch, a file has likely been placed in the wrong location — double-check the paths in steps 2 and 4.

Step 2 — Set extension policies

All values required in this section are provided in your Voicegain Configuration Sheet. Copy and paste each value directly from the sheet rather than typing manually.

You can apply policies at the Computer Configuration level (applies to all users on a device) or User Configuration level (applies to specific users). Choose the appropriate scope for your organisation.

Open the Group Policy Editor and navigate to:

(Computer Configuration or User Configuration) > Policies > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Extensions

Policy 1 — Allow specific extensions to be installed (required)

This policy permits the Voicegain Copilot extension to be installed on managed devices.

Double-click "Allow specific extensions to be installed" and set it to Enabled.
Under Options, click Show…
In the Show Contents popup, enter the Extension ID from your Configuration Sheet into the Value field.
Click OK to close the popup, then OK again to apply the policy.

Policy 2 — Configure extension and user script install sources (required)

This policy specifies the trusted URLs from which the extension is permitted to be installed.

Double-click "Configure extension and user script install sources" and set it to Enabled.
Under Options, click Show…
In the Show Contents popup, enter the Install Source URL values from your Configuration Sheet, one URL per row.
Click OK to close the popup, then OK again to apply the policy.

Additional policies (optional)

Your Configuration Sheet may list additional optional policies beyond the two required ones above. These are not needed for the extension to function but may be recommended based on your organization's setup. If your Configuration Sheet does not list any additional policies, skip this section.

For most optional policies, follow the same steps as the required policies above — set to Enabled, enter values from your Configuration Sheet one per row in the Show Contents popup, and click OK to apply.

Some optional policies are configured differently. One example is Configure extension management settings, which takes a single JSON string rather than individual values in a Show Contents popup. To configure it:

Double-click "Configure extension management settings" and set it to Enabled.
Under Options, locate the text field and paste the entire JSON string from your Configuration Sheet into it as a single value. Do not split it across multiple lines or entries.
Click OK to apply the policy.

Your Configuration Sheet will indicate where a policy requires this approach.

Step 3 — Test your policies

On a target client device, open Microsoft Edge and navigate to edge://policy.
Confirm all Voicegain policies are listed and show an active status. Policies applied to a local computer should appear immediately. If Microsoft Edge was open during configuration, close and reopen it before checking.
For Active Directory deployments, policies are distributed to domain computers at regular intervals set by your domain administrator. To force an immediate refresh on a target computer, run the following from a Command Prompt or PowerShell session, then close and reopen Microsoft Edge.

Policy settings can also be inspected directly in the registry at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge.

Step 4 — End user extension installation

Once policies are confirmed active, direct end users to install the Voicegain Copilot extension by navigating to the Extension Download URL provided in their Voicegain Configuration Sheet.
